Nutritional qualities and health benefits

  • Contains high levels of vitamin C and A.
  • Contains more iron than other fruits and even meat.
  • It has more potassium than bananas.
  • Contains papain and chymopapain A and B, which help digest food.
  • It contains vitamins B1, B2 and B3 Niacin or regulating the nervous system and digestive system, fortify the heart muscle, protect the skin and hair and are essential for growth.
  • It is rich in minerals like calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, sulfur, silicon, sodium and potassium.

 

Origin and cultivation

Probably native to southern Mexico and Central America. Thanks to the Spanish spread throughout the Caribbean and even the Pacific islands. It can produce large and delicious fruit the first year. It is grown throughout the tropical areas of the world.

The scientific name of the plant Carica Papaya is. Other common names are: papayón, papaya, mamaoand papaya tree. In spanish is known as papaya.

Curiosities

 

  • Papaya seeds are edible and taste is spicy watercress.
  • The inner bark is applied to relieve toothache.
  • The latex extracted from green fruits are used to make facial creams, ointments and shampoos. In fact it is an excellent healing of wounds, ulcers, warts, etc..
  • Instead of soap papaya leaves can be used for washing delicate fabrics.
  • The papaya tree can be male, female or hermaphrodite.
  • Another utility of the fruit is the manufacture of beer.
